A bathing system installation goes one of two ways. Either the room is ready and our technician finishes in about two and a half hours, or it is not and a plumber gets called back. The difference is almost never the tub. It comes down to a handful of things about the room that nobody thought to check.
The drain decides whether the door opens
Apollo tubs drain by gravity, so drainage depends on how much fall the line has below the tub floor. A small elevation problem shows up as slow draining or standing water. Run the pipe far enough up and over the valve, and it will not drain at all.
On a side-entry tub, the door cannot open until the tub drains. One facility connected the drain so the pipe sat higher than the floor of the tub. The tub held its water, the door stayed shut, and a resident waited with no lift on hand.
Drain elevation is the highest-stakes item in any bathing system installation, and the cheapest to get right at rough-in. Check the drain type, the height of the connection above the finished floor, and whether it sits below the tub floor. Apollo Advantage requires 2-inch PVC schedule 40 waste, and floor drain, floor sink, and wall drain each have a different connection window, so ask for the diagram that matches yours.
A sloped floor can stop the transfer system from docking
Bathing room floors slope toward the floor drain on purpose, and that slope is steepest right at the drain. Perfectly flat is not realistic, and some slope near a drain is normal. What matters is where it lands. The Level Glide system docks at the door and carrier end, and that end has to sit true.
One facility set a tub with its door end near the floor drain, and the slope left a five-eighths-inch gap under the receiver there. The tub rocked, the carrier would not lock, and the fix was a false floor built to cover the drain and hold the tub level.
What to check: the install manual states the goal plainly, floor flat and level, flattest spot in the room. In practice, focus on the docking end rather than the whole footprint.
Fill time depends on the product, not just the plumbing
A half-inch supply line can hold good pressure and still take twenty minutes to fill a tub. Pressure is the push, flow is the volume, and only a direct-fill product depends on it. This catches assisted living buildings hardest, since many are plumbed to residential code. One facility chose a direct-fill walk-in tub without confirming the building could support it. The supply ran half-inch, fill time became unworkable, and the system was swapped for one with a reservoir that fills ahead of time instead. That is a product-fit decision, not a plumbing failure, and it has to be made before you order.
Supply size is not the only limit, and it is easy to overrate. Every Apollo tub blends hot and cold water through a thermostatic mixing valve first, a safety device that caps flow to keep the blend safe, so even a direct-fill unit with generous supply is still gated by the valve, not just the pipe. Rapid Fill does not bypass that valve, it moves the valve’s work earlier: the reservoir fills and blends through it in advance, with nobody waiting, then empties into the tub through a wider path that does not need to be throttled. Two things make it faster, not one: no valve gating the moment of fill, and no need to meter the water once it is already safe.
What to check: ask whether the system fills in real time or from a reservoir. A direct-fill Apollo Advantage unit needs two three-quarter-inch hose-thread faucets, 30 PSI minimum hot and cold, and 10 gallons per minute at 104 degrees.
The GFCI argument you will have with your electrician
Both methods pass code. Only one works. A GFCI outlet at the tub is more sensitive than a GFCI breaker in the panel and trips on the normal operation of a whirlpool pump or air spa blower. The facility sees a tub that keeps shutting off and calls for service, but nothing is wrong with the tub.
What to check: Apollo Advantage calls for a dedicated 115 VAC receptacle protected by a 15A Class A GFCI circuit breaker at the panel, not a GFCI receptacle. Electrical service also belongs higher than plumbing service.
The tub fits the room. Can it reach the room?
These are two separate questions, and the second one surprises people. Apollo tubs are designed to move through standard 36-inch doors, so for most deliveries this is not the risk it sounds like. The exception is anything narrower than standard, or an unusual combination like a tight corner right after a doorway or a smaller elevator, since corners and elevator cabs need swing clearance, a larger number than installed length. Position matters as much as presence: at one facility, plumbers came back three times to move the rough-in so the tub would sit against the back wall.
What to check: confirm doorways along the delivery path are standard width or wider, walk the full path, and measure every corner and the elevator cab if there is one. An Advantage system ships at 845 pounds.
Ask what sits below the bathing room
This question almost never comes up in a bathing system installation, and one facility learned why it should. A second-floor bathing area with no floor drain flooded, the water went through the floor into the records room below, and a large volume of documents was destroyed. The tub was fine, the records were not.
Apollo recommends a floor drain in every bathing room in case of emergency evacuation, positioned where it will not interfere with resident transfer. CMS requirements for the physical environment put the burden on the facility to keep the space safe. A bathing room sitting over a records room is worth a second look.
Ready means finished, not scheduled
Install on an Advantage system runs about 90 minutes plus an hour for inspection, when the room is ready. When it is not, the technician waits and the facility pays for it. One technician spent three hours on site waiting on plumbers and electricians. Very few installs are plug and play, and plumbing is the usual reason a date slips. The one question worth asking your trades: is it done, or is it scheduled? Those are different answers, and only one means the room is ready.
