  • What Goes Wrong During a Bathing System Installation

    A bathing system installation goes one of two ways. Either the room is ready and our technician finishes in about two and a half hours, or it is not and a plumber gets called back. The difference is almost never the tub. It comes down to a handful of things about the room that nobody thought to check.

    The drain decides whether the door opens

    Apollo tubs drain by gravity, so drainage depends on how much fall the line has below the tub floor. A small elevation problem shows up as slow draining or standing water. Run the pipe far enough up and over the valve, and it will not drain at all.

    On a side-entry tub, the door cannot open until the tub drains. One facility connected the drain so the pipe sat higher than the floor of the tub. The tub held its water, the door stayed shut, and a resident waited with no lift on hand.

    Drain elevation is the highest-stakes item in any bathing system installation, and the cheapest to get right at rough-in. Check the drain type, the height of the connection above the finished floor, and whether it sits below the tub floor. Apollo Advantage requires 2-inch PVC schedule 40 waste, and floor drain, floor sink, and wall drain each have a different connection window, so ask for the diagram that matches yours.

    A sloped floor can stop the transfer system from docking

    Bathing room floors slope toward the floor drain on purpose, and that slope is steepest right at the drain. Perfectly flat is not realistic, and some slope near a drain is normal. What matters is where it lands. The Level Glide system docks at the door and carrier end, and that end has to sit true.

    One facility set a tub with its door end near the floor drain, and the slope left a five-eighths-inch gap under the receiver there. The tub rocked, the carrier would not lock, and the fix was a false floor built to cover the drain and hold the tub level.

    What to check: the install manual states the goal plainly, floor flat and level, flattest spot in the room. In practice, focus on the docking end rather than the whole footprint.

    Fill time depends on the product, not just the plumbing

    A half-inch supply line can hold good pressure and still take twenty minutes to fill a tub. Pressure is the push, flow is the volume, and only a direct-fill product depends on it. This catches assisted living buildings hardest, since many are plumbed to residential code. One facility chose a direct-fill walk-in tub without confirming the building could support it. The supply ran half-inch, fill time became unworkable, and the system was swapped for one with a reservoir that fills ahead of time instead. That is a product-fit decision, not a plumbing failure, and it has to be made before you order.

    Supply size is not the only limit, and it is easy to overrate. Every Apollo tub blends hot and cold water through a thermostatic mixing valve first, a safety device that caps flow to keep the blend safe, so even a direct-fill unit with generous supply is still gated by the valve, not just the pipe. Rapid Fill does not bypass that valve, it moves the valve’s work earlier: the reservoir fills and blends through it in advance, with nobody waiting, then empties into the tub through a wider path that does not need to be throttled. Two things make it faster, not one: no valve gating the moment of fill, and no need to meter the water once it is already safe.

    What to check: ask whether the system fills in real time or from a reservoir. A direct-fill Apollo Advantage unit needs two three-quarter-inch hose-thread faucets, 30 PSI minimum hot and cold, and 10 gallons per minute at 104 degrees.

    The GFCI argument you will have with your electrician

    Both methods pass code. Only one works. A GFCI outlet at the tub is more sensitive than a GFCI breaker in the panel and trips on the normal operation of a whirlpool pump or air spa blower. The facility sees a tub that keeps shutting off and calls for service, but nothing is wrong with the tub.

    What to check: Apollo Advantage calls for a dedicated 115 VAC receptacle protected by a 15A Class A GFCI circuit breaker at the panel, not a GFCI receptacle. Electrical service also belongs higher than plumbing service.

    The tub fits the room. Can it reach the room?

    These are two separate questions, and the second one surprises people. Apollo tubs are designed to move through standard 36-inch doors, so for most deliveries this is not the risk it sounds like. The exception is anything narrower than standard, or an unusual combination like a tight corner right after a doorway or a smaller elevator, since corners and elevator cabs need swing clearance, a larger number than installed length. Position matters as much as presence: at one facility, plumbers came back three times to move the rough-in so the tub would sit against the back wall.

    What to check: confirm doorways along the delivery path are standard width or wider, walk the full path, and measure every corner and the elevator cab if there is one. An Advantage system ships at 845 pounds.

    Ask what sits below the bathing room

    This question almost never comes up in a bathing system installation, and one facility learned why it should. A second-floor bathing area with no floor drain flooded, the water went through the floor into the records room below, and a large volume of documents was destroyed. The tub was fine, the records were not.

    Apollo recommends a floor drain in every bathing room in case of emergency evacuation, positioned where it will not interfere with resident transfer. CMS requirements for the physical environment put the burden on the facility to keep the space safe. A bathing room sitting over a records room is worth a second look.

    Ready means finished, not scheduled

    Install on an Advantage system runs about 90 minutes plus an hour for inspection, when the room is ready. When it is not, the technician waits and the facility pays for it. One technician spent three hours on site waiting on plumbers and electricians. Very few installs are plug and play, and plumbing is the usual reason a date slips. The one question worth asking your trades: is it done, or is it scheduled? Those are different answers, and only one means the room is ready.

  • Does Apollo Only Build Commercial Bathing Systems?

    Short answer: yes. Apollo Bath builds bathing systems for care facilities only. We do not sell or install walk-in tubs for private homes, and we do not have a residential line.

    We get asked this often enough that it deserves a straight answer — usually by someone who found us while researching a walk-in tub for a parent, or by a facility that wants to know whether the tub they saw advertised online is the same thing we build. It is not.

    Why we only build for facilities

    Apollo has been manufacturing bathing equipment in Somerset, Wisconsin since 1978. Everything we make is designed around a single set of conditions: many residents a day, multiple caregivers, a documented cleaning procedure between every use, and a service life measured in decades.

    That is a genuinely different engineering problem than a tub installed in one family’s bathroom. A residential walk-in tub might see a few baths a week. Ours are built for a bathing room that runs all day, every day, for twenty years or more — and we still stock parts for systems installed in the 1990s.

    Building for both markets would mean compromising on one of them. We chose the one we know.

    What actually differs

    If you are comparing options for a facility, the differences matter more than the marketing suggests:

    • Duty cycle. Components rated for continuous institutional use, not occasional household use.
    • Transfer method. Many residents cannot walk into a tub. Seated transfer without a lift or a pivot is what separates a bathing room staff will use from one they avoid.
    • Fill time. A fifteen-minute fill means the next resident waits in the hallway. Rapid Fill™ changes how many baths a shift can complete.
    • Cleanability. A documented disinfecting procedure between every resident, with surfaces and materials that survive it repeatedly.

    The Two Situations Apollo Hears Most

    Situation one: Inspector pressure. A surveyor has cited the facility, or leadership has identified the bathing gap during a visit, or a state agency has followed up in writing. The facility needs to demonstrate corrective action. A broken or non-functional bathing system needs to become a functional one, documented and in use, as quickly as possible.

    F677 and Bathing Compliance: What Surveyors Look For

    F677 bathing compliance is one of the most frequently cited deficiencies in nursing home surveys , and one of the most preventable. The regulation itself is straightforward: facilities must provide ADL care, including bathing, for residents who cannot do it themselves. What makes F677 citations so common is not that facilities ignore bathing. It is that the equipment, the protocol, or the documentation breaks down under the pressure of daily operations.

    This post explains what F677 actually requires, what surveyors look for when they walk into your bathing suite, and what Apollo Bath sees consistently in facilities that pass surveys and in those that don’t.     What F677 Requires

    F677 falls under §483.24(a)(2) of the federal Requirements of Participation for nursing facilities. The regulation requires that a facility ensure each resident receives adequate supervision and assistance to perform ADL functions , including bathing, for any resident who is unable to perform these activities independently.

    The key word is adequate. CMS does not prescribe exactly how often a resident must be bathed or which method must be used. What it does require is that the facility assess each resident’s bathing preferences and needs, document a care plan that reflects those preferences, and demonstrate that staff are following that plan consistently. Surveyors are not just looking at whether bathing happened. They are looking at whether it happened the way the resident needed and wanted it to happen.

    Why Facilities Get Cited Under F677 Bathing Compliance

    The most common reasons facilities receive F677 citations related to bathing:

    • Equipment that is broken, out of service, or difficult to use. A bathing system that staff work around rather than with creates documentation gaps and inconsistent care. When a tub is broken, bathing stops. Surveyors can see in the records exactly when it stopped.
    • Care plans that don’t reflect resident preferences. If a resident prefers a bath over a shower and the care plan doesn’t document that, or if the care plan says bath three times per week and records show once, that gap is a citation waiting to happen.
    • Staffing pressure compressing bathing frequency. This is the most honest and difficult issue. When staffing is tight, bathing schedules get cut. Surveyors see this in ADL records and interview residents. A bathing system that takes longer to prepare, fill, and clean means fewer baths per shift, which means more pressure on an already strained schedule.
    • Transfer practices that compromise dignity. F677 is closely linked to F675 (quality of life) and F550 (resident rights). A bathing transfer that requires a resident to stand, pivot, or feel exposed creates a dignity concern that surveyors cite alongside the ADL deficiency.

    What Surveyors Actually Do in Your Bathing Suite

    When a surveyor assesses F677 bathing compliance, they are doing three things simultaneously. They are observing the environment: does the bathing suite look functional, clean, and welcoming, or does it look neglected? They are reviewing records: do ADL documentation and care plans align with what residents say they receive? And they are interviewing residents and staff: do residents feel their bathing preferences are respected, and can staff describe their bathing protocol clearly?

    The bath room itself tells a story before anyone opens a binder. A tub that is clearly in regular use, a cleaning log posted or accessible, supplies staged and ready. These signal a facility that has systems. A tub pushed into a corner, a bath room used for storage, a staff member who has to look for the cleaning supplies. These signal the opposite.

    Surveyors use Critical Element Pathways for bathing that walk them through a structured assessment. The pathway covers resident preference documentation, frequency of bathing, method of bathing, and staff knowledge of the resident’s individual needs. Facilities that have rehearsed these questions with their staff, and whose records can support the answers, move through the pathway cleanly.

    The Equipment Factor in F677 Bathing Compliance

    Bathing equipment is not directly cited under F677. The citation is about care, not equipment. But equipment condition and design affect F677 compliance in ways that are very direct.

    A broken tub creates a documentation gap the moment bathing stops.     F880 Infection Control and Your Bathing Suite

    F880 infection control bathing citations are the most frequently cited deficiency in nursing home surveys nationally — and your bathing suite is one of the first places surveyors look when they assess your infection prevention program.  A shared-use bathing system that serves dozens of residents every week is exactly the kind of high-touch, high-frequency environment that F880 is designed to regulate. If your bathing protocol is not documented, not followed consistently, or not supported by the right products, your exposure is real.

    This post covers what F880 actually requires as it applies to bathing equipment, what surveyors assess when they walk into your bath room, and what a defensible bathing sanitation protocol looks like in practice.

    What F880 Requires

    F880 falls under §483.80, the infection prevention and control program requirements for long-term care facilities. The regulation requires that facilities establish and maintain an infection prevention and control program designed to investigate, control, and prevent infections in the facility.

    For bathing equipment specifically, F880 requires that shared-use surfaces and equipment be cleaned and disinfected between uses in a manner consistent with current standards of practice. The current standard is the CDC’s two-step clean-and-disinfect protocol — a pre-disinfectant cleaning step that removes organic material, followed by an EPA-registered disinfectant applied with correct contact time. Both steps are required. Neither is optional.

    What F880 does not do is prescribe specific products or tell you exactly how long each step takes. That is left to the facility’s written infection prevention program — which surveyors will ask to see, and which your staff will need to be able to describe without hesitation.

    Why Bathing Suites Create F880 Exposure

    F880 infection control bathing citations don’t usually come from facilities that have no protocol. They come from facilities where the protocol exists on paper but breaks down in practice. The bathing suite is a high-pressure environment — multiple residents, time between baths, staffing constraints, and cleaning supplies that may or may not be staged correctly. When those pressures compound, steps get skipped.

    The specific failure points Apollo sees most often:

    • Skipping step one. Pre-disinfectant cleaning is the step most likely to be compressed under time pressure. Staff apply disinfectant directly to surfaces that haven’t been cleaned first. The disinfectant cannot work correctly on a surface that still has organic material on it — and a surveyor who understands the CDC protocol will catch this.
    • No documentation after each resident. A written protocol with no cleaning log is incomplete. Surveyors want to see that the protocol was followed after every resident, not just cleaned up at end of shift.
    • Internal plumbing not addressed on whirlpool systems. Standard surface cleaning — spray the basin, wipe it down — does not reach the internal plumbing on a whirlpool system. That plumbing recirculated the previous resident’s bathwater. Most facilities and most manufacturers do not address this gap directly. Apollo does.
    • Products that are not EPA-registered. When a surveyor asks what your facility uses to disinfect the tub and why, an EPA-registered product with documented label claims is a complete answer. A product without EPA registration for healthcare use is not.

    What a Defensible F880 Bathing Protocol Looks Like

    A protocol that holds up under F880 infection control survey review has three components: the right products, the right steps in the right order, and consistent documentation.

    Step one: Pre-disinfectant cleaning. Apollo’s Turbo Clean™ is a pre-disinfectant detergent formulated for institutional bathing equipment. Applied after each resident, it lifts organic material — skin cells, oils, bath residue — from all surfaces the resident contacted and all water pathways. This is step one of the CDC protocol. Without it, step two cannot work as intended.

    Step two: Disinfection. Cid-A-L II is an EPA-registered quaternary disinfectant for hard, non-porous surfaces in healthcare settings. Applied after Turbo Clean™ has cleaned and the surface has been rinsed, Cid-A-L II completes the protocol. The label specifies dilution and contact time — follow it exactly, and document that you did.

Every other whirlpool on the market is cleaned from the outside in — the basin surface gets cleaned, but the plumbing that recirculated the bathwater does not.
